Antony Micallef (b. 1975, Swindon, UK) is a British contemporary artist based in London, celebrated for his bold, figure-based paintings. He studied under British artist John Virtue, known for his dramatic monochromatic landscapes that blur the line between abstraction and figuration, drawing inspiration from the English landscape tradition, Eastern brush painting, and American Abstract Expressionism.
After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Plymouth, Micallef worked as a graphic designer while painting at night, before gaining recognition in 2000 as the second-place recipient of the BP Portrait Award. Early in his career, Micallef created graphic works rooted in a street-art-inspired figuration—a style that has since evolved into the deeply painterly, abstract language that defines his current practice. His richly textured canvases draw on the expressive lineage of painters like Frank Auerbach, Leon Kossoff, Chaim Soutine, and Walter Sickert, positioning Micallef within a tradition of emotionally charged, material-driven painting. For him, painting takes on traits of a violent struggle in which the paint is thrown onto and knocked off the canvas.
Micallef was selected as one of Louis Vuitton’s Visionaries and participated in the world tour showcasing his work from 201-2022. In 2023, he produced visuals for Peter Gabriel’s latest album i/o.
Micallef has been featured in numerous recent publications, including Forbes (2025), The Art Newspaper (2024 & 2025), Frieze (2024), Evening Standard (2023), New York Times (2023), Financial Times (2023), Art Basel (2023) and Under the Radar (2023).
Over the years, his paintings have been exhibited widely in galleries, art fairs, and prominent museums. His work is held in collections worldwide, with two pieces in the permanent collection of the Design Museum in London, as well as in notable private collections, such as those of Aby Rosen, Peter Gabriel, Christina Aguilera, and Jude Law, among others.
