Nabil Nahas (b. 1949, Beirut, Lebanon) is widely recognized as one of Lebanon's most celebrated contemporary artists. His visionary practice bridges abstraction and figuration through meditative compositions inspired by geometry, nature, and the cosmos. Nahas grew up in Cairo and Beirut before moving to the United States in 1969, where he earned a BFA from Louisiana State University in 1971 and an MFA from Yale University in 1973. By the mid-1980s, he was living in New York and belonged to a generation of artists responding to both post-minimalism and neo-expressionism, while maintaining a
distinctly individual approach. He returned to Lebanon 18 years later, in the aftermath of the Civil War, and now divides his time between New York and Beirut.
For over three decades, Nahas has built an exceptional international career marked by strong institutional recognition and sustained market relevance.
He held his first solo exhibition at the Robert Miller Gallery in New York in 1977, followed by representation with the influential Holly Solomon Gallery in 1986 and Sperone Westwater in 1997. Today, he is represented by Ben Brown Fine Arts, Lawrie Shabibi Gallery, Galerie Tanit, and Agial Art Gallery along with its sister space, Saleh Barakat Gallery—each a key player in the global contemporary art market.
Nahas's institutional footprint is significant. His first major museum retrospective was held at the Beirut Exhibition Center in 2010, and his works are part of major international collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Portland Museum of Art, Maine; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta; Tate Modern and the British Museum, London; the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi; Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha; and the Barjeel Art Foundation, Sharjah.
A consistent presence on the global art scene, Nahas represented Lebanon at the 25th Bienal de São Paulo (2002) and participated in Glasstress 2011, a Collateral Event of the 54th Venice Biennale. In 2013, he received the National Order of the Cedar for his contribution to Lebanese culture—an honor rarely bestowed on visual artists. Most recently, his 2023 solo exhibition Roots of the Sky at Château La Coste in France reinforced his growing international prominence. Next year, Nahas will represent Lebanon at the 61st Venice Biennale (May 9–November 22, 2026), a milestone expected to elevate his global profile and market visibility further.
